Eating Smart with iSatori - Not Just Another Protein Powder

A special thanks to iSatori and TiffGarrett for providing ten generous samples of iSatori's "Eat Smart" meal replacement shake mix.

What is this stuff? 19g protein?

Let's be honest--if you're the typical protein supplement consumer, the first thing that drew your attention was that less than 20g of protein is advertised. Shocking, right? Here's why it should be refreshing: you need other stuff in your diet, too! iSatori is aiming for a true "meal replacement" powder here, not just another scoop of protein you can throw in with peanut butter and banana for a complete meal (though I imagine that does taste great, too).

Let's do a rundown of what's in this powder:
    • Whey protein - From WPI, casein, WPC, and a sprinkle of hydrolyzed WPC. This is definitely a blend; I'm not going to claim that digestion speed matters much, but what will be noticeable is thickness and satiety, of which blends will be bigger on versus straight WPI.
    • Nutrim, FOS, Fibersol-2 - Very fancy fiber ingredients from oat fiber and other digestion-resistant oligosaccharides. At 3g per serving it's not unmanageable, but it's enough to again increase thickness and satiety while providing other fiber benefits.
    • Fats - From sunflower oil, buttermilk, cocoa butter, and a bit of flaxseed powder, in addition to the residuals in the whey products. Not a huge amount, but enough to improve the consistency.
    • Probiotics - That's right, bacteria on the label! If you've ever eaten yogurt to help your digestion, you're getting a bit of that effect here. Hard to say how much is present, but it's there.
    • Vitamin mix - It's an intimidatingly-large portion of the label, but it's basically just a smattering of a bunch of vitamins. Ranging from 10-20% RDA on a slew of vitamins and minerals, it'll neither be a standalone supplement nor push you towards toxicity on its own.
    • Flavors - Chocolate from cocoa powder, slightly-sugared chocolate chips, and sucralose to sweeten the pot

One of the reasons I was excited to do this mini-log for Eat Smart was its broad inclusion of fats, fibers, vitamins/minerals, and even probiotics in an all-in-one. All powdered food supplements are still just supplements and we should all be using them only as a small part of an overall good diet, but having some of the big benefits of whole food sources included is very welcome here.

Overall, I'm very happy with the Eat Smart profile. In particular, I'm very happy that it doesn't include fillers like maltodextrin (caveat: Fibersol-2 is digestion-resistant maltodextrin), the common taurine and glycine nitrogen padders to cheaply bump protein counts, or iffy ingredients like mono- and diglycerides that could be hiding trans fats. I do have a few pretty minor complaints, though: the freeform L-glutamine, while here in a very small amount, is really unnecessary; added sodium chloride (table salt) is likely unnecessary and perhaps even undesirable, as I think most of us are getting plenty of sodium already; the flaxseed powder, as the third-to-last ingredient occurring way after even that table salt, is clearly added in a small amount just to have the "we have Omega-3" claim (despite ALA not being what we really look for, anyway--but I don't blame iSatori for not putting fish oil in this, ew!); carrageenan could be omitted to limit worries among the paranoid; and finally, given that the rest of the product is sweetened artificially, it seems like Eat Smart should just go whole-hog and use artificially-sweetened chocolate chips--probably just a sourcing issue.

I want to stress that my "complaints" here are all pretty minor. I'm still psyched to be trying a "meal replacement" product with no 'ugh' ingredients and a wide spectrum of the stuff I'd like to get from my overall food intake.

Alright, that's all pretty boring--let's move on to the unboxing and first taste!

Eat Smart arrives -- the first taste

Did a nice workout today with bench press, dumbbell rows, squats, a few deadlifts, and some PT exercises for some muscular imbalances with my trapezius.

I came home from the gym to conveniently find a nice little surprise from FedEx:

Awesome. Given that I'm used to having a smoothie after my workouts (not for any anabolic window, just for cooling down and taste!), I dug right in. Here's me double-checking the 34.5g serving size as I added my first packet to the blender after crushing up 4 ice cubes with it:

Impressive that it was spot on! Usually always a bit of variance, but not here. OK, nerdy weighing moment over. I added in a cup of unsweetened almond milk, nothing else and let the Blendtec have at it for 40 seconds. The result a nice, creamy shake:

I was really surprised how thick and creamy this came out. I make smoothies like this all the time, but to achieve this level of thickness, I usually have to add in a gram or two of guar and/or xanthan gum; otherwise it comes thin or, even worse, chunky from the blended ice. Eat Smart seems to have enough thickening agents on its own between the fiber sources and cellulose gum to really thicken things up. Even with the 4 ice cubes and a whole cup of liquid, this still came out to almost milkshake consistency; not spoon-standing milkshake, but definitely straw-standing.

Flavor-wise, I'll be honest and say that I'm usually not a huge fan of chocolate flavors. They typically come out either too malty or too "fake" in an attempt at milk chocolate. I was really happy with how well "chocolate chocolate chip" executed here; the flavor came out almost exactly like partially-melted chocolate ice cream. It's definitely on the sweeter side, which is a big plus for me, but something worth keeping in mind if you don't have a sweet tooth--you could always add some more liquid to thin it out and reduce the flavor intensity.

My blender pretty well pulverized all of those poor chocolate chips and incorporated them into the smoothie, so I'll have to comment on those with another packet.

    Really enjoyed the first taste!

One extra thing to note: it's just a single data point, but so far, Eat Smart seems to be quite a bit more filling than your run-of-the-mill protein powder. 45 minutes after having the smoothie, I headed to an Indian buffet (love Indian food!) and found myself getting too full to continue much earlier than expected; this is likely a great boon when you're cutting and want to stay full, but if you're on a bulk, beware! Again, just a single data point--I'll have to keep updating with the "how full am I" report.

Given that the flavor already tastes like chocolate ice cream to me, I'm looking forward to trying to actually make a frozen food out of it. I have one of those nifty hand-churning freezer ice cream makers, and I fully intend to throw some Eat Smart, Greek yogurt, and almond milk in to see what comes out.

In the shorter term, though, I have a business trip for the next couple of days and plan to bring some Eat Smart and a shaker bottle with me. I'll get some good pictures of the results (and my impressions!) once I've dug in.

If anyone has any other recipe suggestions for a chocolate chocolate chip packet of tastiness, let me know!

    Thanks for stopping in!

Yeah, I'm very pleased so far, though of course extremely apologetic for ruining those lovely chocolate chips

I may try a packet in a bowl of pre-flight proatmeal in the morning; that'll simultaneously test out that capacity and provide a real-world experiment on Eat Smart's digestive effective in enclosed spaces! I also have two packets stashed in a blender bottle, so I'm prepared to fully enjoy that chocolate chip texture.

Where are you going for business? What type of work to you do, if you don't mind me asking?

Have a safe flight! I can't wait to hear what you think about the protein in oatmeal. I usually mix the protein with water and make pudding then I add it to the oatmeal - MMMMMMMM good!

Thanks, guys! It's definitely been a long day; alarm set for 3:15am, but woke up at 2:45am out of sheer anticipation. I work in software development and don't have to do these in-person business trips too often, but they're always an adventure when they pop up

My Eat Smart proatmeal was constructed in advance of the great advice--I really want to try the PB and pre-pudding techniques!

Here's what I did bright and early at 3am, though:

    Half-asleep chocolate-cinnamon-walnut Eat Smart proatmeal

Started with 24g steel-cut oats, 10g ground walnut, and 2g cinnamon; added about half a cup of water, stirred, and microwaved for 3 minutes, stirring once.

Added in my packet of Eat Smart along with a serving (46g) of liquid egg whites; stirred thoroughly, then microwaved for a few more seconds to let it thicken.

    The end result!

It definitely doesn't look like much, especially with the crappy phone camera I'm currently using, but it came out pretty tasty. I'm a big fan of the "spiced chocolate" flavor with cinnamon-accented cocoa, and the "melted ice cream" flavor of Eat Smart worked really well for this. I was surprised that the oatmeal still came out quite sweet despite the walnuts and egg white, which usually leave it bitter.

Texture-wise, Eat Smart mixes thick! I'd say that this is just about on par with casein for consistency. I had to add quite a bit of water along with the egg white on the last step to get it to mix up nicely. I like this a lot; made it a more filling pre-flight snack. The chocolate chips were unfortunately not terribly distinguishable from the texture of the steel-cut oatmeal; I swear, I'll have some comments on the chips sooner or later! Definitely by the ice cream, at least.

Overall macros of the meal: 333 calories, 29g protein, 12g fat, 26g carbs (7g fiber).

Back to meetings, but I should have more to report tomorrow. Going to try an improvised workout in the morning with the hotel "fitness room," and I'm suspecting that the "continental breakfast" is going to make me rely on one of my stashed packets of Eat Smart for any reasonable semblance of suitable nutrition.

Thanks, KoHuskie! Really enjoying the Eat Smart so far.

Another quick travel update: Eat Smart on the go

Woke up this morning and wanted to get a mini-workout in. Checked out the fitness room...

Not much to work with here... But I'll use what I got!

DB OHP, some goblet squats, weighted crunches, and some DB internal/external rotation, along with 25m on the elliptical. Not a huge workout, but not shabby for sneaking in.

"Continental breakfast" was predictably distressing. Pastries, pre-sweetened oatmeal, bagels, packaged cereal, and juice. Fortunately, I as able to grab a couple hard boiled eggs and a carton of milk, which allowed me to prepare a more appropriate breakfast of champions:

Delicious in the blender bottle! Still nice and thick and sweet, even after adding a little extra water on top of the 240ml of milk.

I had my first real experience with the chocolate chips, too:

Fortunately, I had a spoon with me and didn't need to rely on my hand to fish those guys out The chocolate chips are tasty, but they definitely don't mesh perfectly with blender bottle physics.

Off to work to do some meeting and presenting. I have another packet with me -- we'll see if I have to rely on it or not!

Travel update - the ultimate Eat Smart portability test

Had a salad bar for lunch, so I was craving some protein by mid-afternoon. Surrounded by a bunch of people, the shaker bottle isn't a good option--so it's time to try a stirred smoothie, the impossible test of protein micronization!

Poured in half my milk, added the packet of Eat Smart, then poured in the other half...

At this point, I was pretty skeptical that this stuff would stir. I mean, look at it! 30-60s of vigorous-but-careful stirring later:

As you can see from the awful picture (one of these days I'll shoot with something better than a $50 test phone), the end mix has a little lumpiness on top, but no big clumps. Past the top layer, it's nice and creamy. This is pretty impressive! I've never seen even a straight whey isolate perform much better than this on the 8oz stir test; given that Eat Smart is a blend with a bunch of extra thickeners, this result isn't bad at all.

Rather than drink it, I ate the smoothie one spoonful at a time like a thin pudding. Very tasty, and again a lot like melted chocolate chip ice cream. One nice advantage of using the spoon is that I was able to scoop down and get a bit of chocolate chip on every other slurp.

8oz of 2% milk and an Eat Smart packet make for a nice little meal: total of 280 calories, 29g protein, 8g fat, and 23g carbs (3g fiber). Protein craving satisfied!

Later on this weekend, once I'm finally back home, I hope to get a chance at attempting some ice cream. Given that I keep droning on about how the flavor reminds me of melted ice cream, I can't wait to see if the flavor stays consistent once it's frozen up!

Awesome work and way to give EatSmart a good test for on the go! The PB sludge is a favorite of mine and the propudding is always good. A little less water and you can get a really good pudding consistency.

Still looking forward to the ice cream!!

Thanks, Tiff! Very busy weekend; flight got delayed on the way back after serendipitously getting put in the TSA Pre™ line (OMG, so good), then a bunch of sorting out things afterwards.

As for not being a fan of software: not weird at all! I think I totally understand, actually. My job seems to be growing more and more towards the project management side of things, anyhow; I find that my love of the nitty-gritty low-level stuff is getting replaced more and more with wanting to coordinate people and resources. I guess I'm getting old!

I was able to give it a try!

    Eat Smart ice cream!

    Setup:
    • 2 packets Eat Smart Chocolate Chocolate Chip
    • Half cup (115g) nonfat Greek yogurt
    • 1.25 cups (~290g) unsweetened almond milk
    • 40g erythritol to keep it sweet
    • Touch of xanthan gum (1-2g) to keep it thick

I'd normally just throw everything in the blender and have at it, but after finding out that it pulverizes those chocolate chips, I first pre-mixed everything but the Eat Smart and then folded it by hand:

Worth it! Kept the chocolate chips intact.

Once it was all stirred up, it was into the ice cream maker with it:

10 minutes or so with a few churns every minute, and here's what it looked like:

Mmmm, looking good. I think I could have used even more liquid, but I like the ice cream to be nice and creamy--it went in with almost a pudding-like consistency, so it stayed thick and creamy even as it melted on the tongue. As I expected, Chocolate Chocolate Chip is the perfect flavor for ice cream! It's tasted like melted chocolate ice cream every time I've had it; freezing it, it tastes just like frozen chocolate ice cream

It doesn't look like too much in the post-mix picture above, but this was enough for two fairly generous bowls:

Each bowl was about 200 calories with almost 30g of protein and virtually no sugar. Tasted really close to the full-fat, full-sugar "real thing," so I'd rate it as a huge success! Even the wife, consumer of the second bowl, gave her stamp of approval -- that means it has to be good

My Eat Smart adventures of the weekend don't quite end here, though; I'll update in a bit with my first try at a Chocolate Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Banana (CCCPBB?) smoothie--turned out great!

I'd much rather manage people and resources as well. The nitty-gritty stuff is just too time consuming. I guess I'm getting old too!

Now to the important stuff - WOWSERS!! The ice cream looks super yummy and creamy. I'll definitely be trying this instead of my weekly McDonald's ice cream cone - don't judge me. LOL .. What type of ice cream maker is that? I'll have to make an investment.

I'm looking forward to the CCCPBB goodness!

It's an old Donvier ice cream maker that I managed to pick up lightly-used on eBay for $25 or $30. It's been a good investment! You just leave the inner canister (which is filled with a dense liquid coolant of some sort) in the freezer for a day, then you pull it out and assemble it with the case, lid, and crank for making the goods. Once the mix goes in, you just turn the handle every now and then until it arrives at the desired consistency. I've made ice creams, gelatos, and a few sorbets so far--all have turned out pretty well!

I don't usually do too much chocolate, but Eat Smart made for, by far, the best frozen dessert I've done so far. The flavor nails the ice cream vibe so perfectly.

I'll get those CCCPBB pics up soon

Well, the bad news is that several of my pictures are way too blurry. The good news is twofold: first, I finally got my normal phone repaired and it should have a better camera; and second, I did manage to snag a good setup picture:

    • One cup of unsweetened almond milk
    • One generous tablespoon (18g) peanut butter
    • Half of a medium banana (66g)
    • 3 or 4 pre-crushed ice cubes
    • dash of xanthan gum (helps smooth the ice)
    • and of course, 1 packet of Eat Smart Chocolate Chocolate Chip

Result was great! The PB and banana go fantastically with the "chocolate ice cream" flavor, and I ended up with something vaguely reminiscent of chunky monkey ice cream The mix-ins make the shake even creamier, too, and the smoothie went down like sweet silk, one thick spoonful at a time.

Sounds good, I do the same minus the xanthan gum, but use oats too. Comes out great!

Couple more tries here, nothing too crazy:

Last night: Eat Smart yogurt pudding

    • 1 packet Eat Smart
    • 1/2 cup (114g) nonfat Greek Yogurt
    • 1/2 cup (120g) unsweetened almond milk

Pretty simple idea, but tastes great! I think the yogurt might actually draw too much attention away from the flavor of the Chocolate Chocolate Chip, though; the sweet and tart fight it out too much. Just using a little almond milk would likely be better, though not as creamy.

This morning: Eat Smart almond joy proatmeal

    • 36g steel-cut oats
    • 15g unsweetened shredded coconut
    • dash Torani sugar-free coconut syrup
    • 10g slivered almonds
    • (not pictured) 1/4 cup (60g) almond milk
    • 1 packet Eat Smart

Mix the oats with water, microwave for 2 minutes; add the almonds, coconut and a bit of syrup along with a bit more water; microwave another minute. At this point, I realized I had underestimated how much moisture the coconut would suck up--oops!

No worries--add in the Eat Smart with the almond milk, mix it up, and it's good to go, if not terribly pretty:

I love my chocolate coconut, and this delivered! I think a whole packet was actually too much for this ratio, though--the chocolate overpowered a bit, which makes sense given the 35g/15g split. Guess I need to make a bigger bowl next time Also, I think that toasting the coconut and almond in a pan and then adding it at the end might be even better, relying on just the dash of syrup for the coconut "infusion."

Macros on the proatmeal: 451 calories, 27g protein, 22g fat, 40g carbs (10g fiber)

I'm down close to the end of my 10 packets now, and working on coming up with an interesting way to end my Eat Smart experiments. Lets see if I can do something fun

Do you cook a lot? Based on your observations of tastes, ratios, texture, etc., sounds like you've got yourself some culinary skills.
I'm looking forward to what you're going to do with your last packet(s).
I'm definitely no gourmand -- plenty of the guys like Rob on here put me to shame in that regard -- but I do like experimenting with recipes, especially protein ones, and I'm slowly getting better at it It's always great when you can tweak a "treat" just slightly and end up with a great staple! Until I figured out those tricks, I missed my pastries and cookies dearly. Now, I actually prefer the taste and texture of the protein varieties!

I had a flash of inspiration tonight and it turned out quite well. More coming soon!

Thanks! I wasn't sure if it'd be a good investment at the time (mostly of valuable storage space!) but it's definitely been worthwhile

The Grand Finale -- Eat Smart donuts!

    Ingredients:
    • 1 egg
    • 1 egg white
    • 90ml (~1/3 cup) almond milk
    • 1/4 cup (60g) unsweetened applesauce
    • 30g coconut flour
    • 40g erythritol (or whatever sweetener)
    • 1/2 tsp baking powder
    • and of course, 1 packet Eat Smart Chocolate Chocolate Chip

Blend it all up and then pour it into a lubricated baking donut pan -- I purposefully overfill above the outcroppings for the holes, for reasons explained shortly.

    Important note
Much like any baking project, leftover batter is fair game.
325 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes or so! Into the oven it goes:

Meanwhile, cleaning up and making a quick frosting: 30g fat free cream cheese (Frankencheese!), a couple tablespoons almond milk, another tablespoon of coconut flour, and some sweetener; microwave until soft, then mix it up and put it in the fridge:

Once a toothpick comes out clean, remove from the oven and pop those bad boys out; overfilling the reservoirs turns them into a "cup-shaped" donut, with a perfect little spot in the middle for filling!

The frosting was already nice and spreadable, so I put it straight on the warm donuts. The result was awesome!

Flavor-wise, these tasted like a cupcake-brownie hybrid in handheld donut form. The chips unfortunately got pulverized as usual, but the chocolate chip flavor still shone through nicely.

Compared to other proteins I've tried, Eat Smart bakes a little more delicately than some, but this is easy to fix by using a little less liquid or just being careful. The flavor definitely can't be beat!

The rough macro breakdown per frosted donut: 70 calories, 7g protein, 2g fat, 8g carbs (4g fiber)

Sadly enough, I believe that was my last packet--I've have a great time here with Eat Smart and I'll be posting up some closing thoughts and reviews soon!
